Models that are new to the modeling industry can make a successive web modeling career. The web model needs to have photogenic figures and beautiful face.
May 28, 2009 Honduras rocked by 7.1 earthquake Magnitude 0
09.01According to firefighter Juan Sevilla, wooden homes collapsed in Puerto Cortes, 120 miles north of Tegucigalpa, as well as a stadium wall in Comayagua, 60 miles north of the capital. A major bridge across the Ulua River suffered major damage. A water tower toppled in the town of Independence. Electricity was out all the way to the Mexican border.
Dozens of workers were evacuated from factories in San Pedro Sula after cracks were discovered in the buildings. In the same city, a two-story warehouse caught fire. The roads in several cities are reported to have sustained cracks.
National Emergency Minister Melvin Hulse made a radio plea, “I urge you not to panic, but to remain calm. Your government is monitoring the situation and will be keeping you informed.”
The USGS is reporting that a magnitude 4.8 aftershock hit off Honduras about three hours after the initial quake.
Sun Ming Ming: I am feeling good and feel as if I am getting stronger every day.
What has been the toughest part of the recovering process after the surgery?
SMM: The toughest part was the three weeks after the surgery. The surgery was on September 26 and I was not allowed to train or pick up anything heavier than a telephone. I missed going into the gym and playing. I rested, watched classic NBA games, a lot of old Laker-Celtic games, live NBA training camps, and read books.
Tell me a little bit about your childhood. How was growing up in China?
SMM: I grew up in Heilonjiang Province in a small town called Bayan. It is in Northern China, close to Russia. The population is of about 2,000 people. During the summer and spring, it is a farming community. The winters are very cold there is no possibility to farm.
When and why did you first play basketball?
SMM: I first began playing basketball when I was about 15. City officials saw that I was bigger than most kids and I was recruited into the basketball program. I enjoyed it from the beginning. When I first started playing, I was around 6-foot-7.
How scary was the whole thing – the illness, the operation?
SMM: I was not too nervous about the surgery until the night before. My doctor, Mr. Shahinian at the Skull Base Institute was very optimistic from the beginning and I had confidence in him. He has been great. When I first found out about the tumor causing my growth and stopping me from building strength and stamina, I was actually relieved. I had been working very hard since arriving in the United States, but was not progressing very well. Now with the tumor gone, I feel better, I am lifting heavier weights, and running longer distances without getting too tired. The progress motivates me to work harder.
What did you know about the NBA before arriving at the United States?
SMM: I knew who Michael Jordan was and liked him. I knew the NBA has the best players in the world and the game was much faster than in China. Since 2002, more games were being shown on Chinese TV and I tried to watch as many as possible. I admire Tim Duncan's skills. I know Shaq is the strongest and of course Yao is the best Chinese player. Now, I watch the NBA whenever I can.
Have you received donations from basketball people, NBA people?
SMM: My agent, Charles Bonsignore, took care of the fundraising. He told me that most of the donations were from very nice people from California to New York to Hawaii. We borrowed a lot of money and the doctor helped a lot too. Charles said that the only NBA person who donated was (director of the Las Vegas Summer League) Warren LeGarie. I am thankful to everyone.
How long have you been away from your family?
SMM: I have been away from my family for almost a year. I talk to them at least once a week, though.
And who's been your support people here?
SMM: I have a lot of people that have helped and supported me. Obviously everyone at Passing Lane Sports, Charles, Frank Catapano, Harold Woolfalk, and Mike Martin have worked hard to help me. When I was in North Carolina, I lived with a great family (Rocky and Celeste Manning). Keith Gatlin and James Wilson trained me while in North Carolina. In Ventura, California, it seems like the whole city has supported me. Everyone has been so friendly. I lived with Charles and his family for five months, then moved into a house with players from Ventura College. My translator, Jim Chang has been helpful to both Charles and I. Greg Winslow and Jeff Theiler, the coaches at Ventura College have welcomed me as if I am an official team member. I practice with them every day. Coach Theiler stays after practice to privately work with me. Also, my trainer David York has helped me build much-needed strength. The players at Ventura College are fun to live with and they have welcomed me as a teammate. There have been so many people that I cannot name them all.
What would have happened had you taken this operation later this year instead of last September?
SMM: I always think about where would I be if I had the surgery last in September of 2004. In China, they only told me that I had low iron... That is why I lacked stamina. But I cannot look back. I am happy and healthy now.
How much money do you need to raise in order to pay all the expenses of the operation?
SMM: In order to pay medical loans, I am not completely sure the exact amount I know it is over $70,000.
How's a typical day in your life now?
SMM: Since I started working out again at the end of October, my days are usually the same. From Monday to Friday, I go to English class from 9 to 12. My English has improved a lot since classes began. At 12:30, I work out in the weight room and do footwork drills. At 2:00, I practice with Ventura College. At 4:00, Coach Theiler and I work more footwork and post drills. By 5:30, I am home. On the weekends, Coach Winslow will open the gym so I can shoot and get more weight room in.
What are your short-term goals?
SMM: I think I have reached my short-term goals. I am healthy and happy. I feel myself getting stronger.
Do you see playing in the NBA as an option in the near future? SMM: I would not be working this hard if I did not see the possibility of me being in the NBA. I think that if I continue the progress that I am experiencing over the next 10 months, the NBA is a realistic goal. I love playing basketball and will do anything the NBA asks of me in order to get an opportunity.
1) Chemical Peels Chemical peels are really the only effective treatment for acne. Chemical peels can be done in a dermatologist’s office and range from mild peels to deep peels. Mild peels work by removing the top layer of skin, thus allowing the underneath layers to grow. When combined with topical solutions, chemical peels are effective at treating acne. The down-side to chemical peels are that they can be prohibitively expensive. However, if your acne is interfering with your life to the point where you need to seek counseling because of self esteem issues, chemical peels for acne treatment can be covered under health insurance. In some cases, if the acne returns, the chemical peel may need to be repeated. There are a few treatments available that the patient can use at home to stave off any future acne once they have undergone chemical peel treatment.
2) Light Therapy for AcneUltraviolet light therapy has been used for years to treat acne. Light therapy employs the use of artificial ultraviolet light and directs it onto the affected areas of the skin. The acne typically clears up after about a week of treatments. The up side is that there are now ultraviolet light boxes sold for the home that are affordable so that once you have been treated by the dermatologist, you can get instructions on how to treat yourself at home. The down side to light therapy, if any, is that it takes several treatments to see a significant difference.
3) Topical Acne Creams Solutions Pro-Active is one of the newest treatments in acne treatment and has proven effective in clearing up acne. It involves treating the skin with several topical solutions, one of which is a mild chemical peel, astringent and a conditioner. This has proven to be effective at helping control mild acne breakouts, although it is far from the miracle cure it is depicted, with or without the endorsement of celebrity Jessica Simpson. It has inspired many other knock offs that pretty much use the same method of peeling the skin using an antiseptic, and then a softener to keep it from looking burned and flaking.
4) Natural Methods to Reducing AcneThere are a host of natural treatments that can be used effectively to treat acne. There are some essential oils, such as Lavender for example, or Rose that can be applied to acne ridden skin for treatment. Lavender and rose are the few essential oils that can directly be applied to skin without causing damage and both have proven effective at treating acne breakouts. Aloe Vera, a substance that is derived from the plant with the same name, is often used on the skin for a multitude of reasons including curing acne and healing cuts and burns. You can reduce acne with Acnezine acne treatment; they're the #1 rated natural acne treatment products that offer guaranteed results
5) Vitamin E Vitamin E, an ingredient that is found in certain foods as well as vitamin supplements has been found to be very effective in curing acne. For relief from acne, all you need to do is break the vitamin E capsule and apply it directly to the effected area. Because acne is formed from the inside out and treatments concentrate on the outside in, acne has always been difficult to treat. Hormone therapy can be considered in adult acne, although it is definitely not advisable in teenaged acne. Daily application of an astringent after washing the face is tremendously effective in keeping acne under control. One cure-all that can be used to treat acne and clear up oily skin is an old remedy that still works today. It costs about 79 cents in the drug store and goes under the name of “Peroxide.”
Acne's scars Acne leaves its scars not only on the face and body, but also on the heart. Because it is something that affects vulnerable youngsters who have not yet learned the art of deflecting ridicule or taking it on the ‘chin’; snide comments and cruel jokes by other peers can leave the acne- riddled person feeling bereft and even more self-conscious than ever before. Teenagers who are the receiving end of these jokes- Calcium: The amount of calcium in a container of yogurt varies from brand to brand. Some, like Stoneyfield Farms Yo Calcium have 50% of your daily calcium in one 6 oz container!
- Vitamin D: Vitamin D is added to milk and therefore yogurt. Not all brands have Vitamin D, but most major brands do.
- Probiotics: Yogurts are made using active, good bacteria also known as probiotics. These specific strains of "good" bacteria help intestinal health by aiding digestion and may boost immune function.
- Protein: Most brands will have at least 7 grams and some more in an 8 oz cup of yogurt.
- Other nutrients: Yogurt also contains potassium, magnesium, and Vitamin B12.
- Level of fat: You can get yogurts that are very high in fat, but most are in the low fat or fat free variety. Whether you go with fat free or low fat is up to you and your taste preference. Low fat yogurts usually only have 2-3 grams of fat, but some of that fat is from saturated fat. If you have high cholesterol, even 1-2 grams of saturated fat can be significant.
- Level of sugar: Remember that all yogurt (unless it is soy) comes from milk. Milk has lactose, which is sugar. So even if that yogurt doesn't have any sugar added, the label will have about 10-14 grams of sugar.
- Type of sugar: If you are not opposed to artificial sweeteners, then light yogurts will give you the least amount of calories. If you do not choose to use artificial sweeteners, then there will be sugar added (in flavored yogurts) from either high fructose corn syrup, honey, brown rice syrup, cane syrup, sugar, or fruit.
- Flavor: I am so thrilled with the wide variety of flavors available. You can get plain (no flavor or sugar added) or you can get flavors like white chocolate raspberry or peach green tea. Is it dessert or breakfast? Who cares!
- Greek or American: One of my favorite breakfast or snack treats is Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt has made a big splash in America in the past year or so. There are three main brands that I have seen, Fage (make sure you get 0% or 2% or you will get a LOT of fat in the "Fage Total"!), Oikos (made by Stoneyfield Farms), and Chobani. Benefits of Greek yogurt are that it has twice as much protein as traditional American yogurt (may keep you full longer), is much more tangy, and the texture is nice and thick. If you are sick of watery yogurt, put a hefty spoon into a container of Greek yogurt (Fage is thickest) and feel the difference.
- Organic or conventional: Again, personal choice as to whether you want to consume organic dairy or regular conventional. Stoneyfield Farms and Rachel's are both organic.
Politics and all that goes with it is just another headache for soap opera actress turned singer Ussy Sulistiawaty, so she’s going to steer clear of it all and abstain from voting in the upcoming presidential election.
The public, through the media, is keeping an eye on the day-to-day political dynamics among future pairs of candidates as they gear up to contest the election, scheduled for early July.
“I would choose none of the three pairs because I am confused about how to weigh up the choices.
All of them promise change but none of us know if it will actually happen,” Ussy said, as quoted by entertainment website detikhot.com.
“I’m so confused, I’d rather abstain.”
The mother of one also commented on the emotional reactions from political parties and candidates who failed to win power in April’s legislative election. She said she believes they show a lack of sportsmanship and could not take losing gracefully.
“Just watching [how they reacted] annoys me,” she said.
Ussy, who recently turned to singing after years of starring in soap operas, said hoped that politicians could be wiser and instead of only fighting for seats would focus on improving the nationWhat is H1N1 (swine flu)? H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. Other countries, including Mexico and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person-to-person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.
Why is this new H1N1 virus sometimes called “swine flu”? This virus was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs in North America. But further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and avian genes and human genes. Scientists call this a "quadruple reassortant" virus.
Novel H1N1 Flu in Humans
Are there human infections with this H1N1 virus in the U.S.? Yes. Cases of human infection with this H1N1 influenza virus were first confirmed in the U.S. in Southern California and near Guadalupe County, Texas. The outbreak intensified rapidly from that time and more and more states have been reporting cases of illness from this virus. An updated case count of confirmed novel H1N1 flu infections in the United States is kept at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/investigation.htm. CDC and local and state health agencies are working together to investigate this situation.
Is this new H1N1 virus contagious? CDC has determined that this new H1N1 virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it is not known how easily the virus spreads between people.
What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people? The symptoms of this new H1N1 flu virus in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting. Also, like seasonal flu, severe illnesses and death has occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.
How severe is illness associated with this new H1N1 virus? It’s not known at this time how severe this virus will be in the general population. CDC is studying the medical histories of people who have been infected with this virus to determine whether some people may be at greater risk from infection, serious illness or hospitalization from the virus. In seasonal flu, there are certain people that are at higher risk of serious flu-related complications. This includes people 65 years and older, children younger than five years old, pregnant women, and people of any age with chronic medical conditions. It’s unknown at this time whether certain groups of people are at greater risk of serious flu-related complications from infection with this new virus. CDC also is conducting laboratory studies to see if certain people might have natural immunity to this virus, depending on their age.
How does this new H1N1 virus spread? Spread of this H1N1 virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
How long can an infected person spread this virus to others? At the current time, CDC believes that this virus has the same properties in terms of spread as seasonal flu viruses. With seasonal flu, studies have shown that people may be contagious from one day before they develop symptoms to up to 7 days after they get sick. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods. CDC is studying the virus and its capabilities to try to learn more and will provide more information as it becomes available.
Exposures Not Thought to Spread New H1N1 Flu
Can I get infected with this new H1N1 virus from eating or preparing pork? No. H1N1 viruses are not spread by food. You cannot get this new HIN1 virus from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.
Is there a risk from drinking water? Tap water that has been treated by conventional disinfection processes does not likely pose a risk for transmission of influenza viruses. Current drinking water treatment regulations provide a high degree of protection from viruses. No research has been completed on the susceptibility of the novel H1N1 flu virus to conventional drinking water treatment processes. However, recent studies have demonstrated that free chlorine levels typically used in drinking water treatment are adequate to inactivate highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza. It is likely that other influenza viruses such as novel H1N1 would also be similarly inactivated by chlorination. To date, there have been no documented human cases of influenza caused by exposure to influenza-contaminated drinking water.
Can the new H1N1 flu virus be spread through water in swimming pools, spas, water parks, interactive fountains, and other treated recreational water venues? Influenza viruses infect the human upper respiratory tract. There has never been a documented case of influenza virus infection associated with water exposure. Recreational water that has been treated at CDC recommended disinfectant levels does not likely pose a risk for transmission of influenza viruses. No research has been completed on the susceptibility of the H1N1 influenza virus to chlorine and other disinfectants used in swimming pools, spas, water parks, interactive fountains, and other treated recreational venues. However, recent studies have demonstrated that free chlorine levels recommended by CDC (1–3 parts per million [ppm or mg/L] for pools and 2–5 ppm for spas) are adequate to disinfect avian influenza A (H5N1) virus. It is likely that other influenza viruses such as novel H1N1 virus would also be similarly disinfected by chlorine.
Can H1N1 influenza virus be spread at recreational water venues outside of the water? Yes, recreational water venues are no different than any other group setting. The spread of this novel H1N1 flu is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
Prevention & Treatment
What can I do to protect myself from getting sick? There is no vaccine available right now to protect against this new H1N1 virus. There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza.
Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
Other important actions that you can take are:
- Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
- Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for a week or so; a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based hand rubs, tissues and other related items might could be useful and help avoid the need to make trips out in public while you are sick and contagious.
What is the best way to keep from spreading the virus through coughing or sneezing? If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible. If you are sick, stay home for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Put your used tissue in the waste basket. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.
What is the best technique for washing my hands to avoid getting the flu? Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Wash with soap and water or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner. CDC recommends that when you wash your hands -- with soap and warm water -- that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn't need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.
What should I do if I get sick? If you live in areas where people have been identified with new H1N1 flu and become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people, except to seek medical care.
If you have severe illness or you are at high risk for flu complications, contact your health care provider or seek medical care. Your health care provider will determine whether flu testing or treatment is needed
If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care.
In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Fast breathing or trouble breathing
- Bluish or gray skin color
- Not drinking enough fluids
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Not waking up or not interacting
- Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
- Sudden dizziness
- Confusion
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Are there medicines to treat infection with this new virus? Yes. CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with the new H1N1 flu virus. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. During the current outbreak, the priority use for influenza antiviral drugs during is to treat severe influenza illness.
What is CDC’s recommendation regarding "swine flu parties"? "Swine flu parties" are gatherings during which people have close contact with a person who has novel H1N1 flu in order to become infected with the virus. The intent of these parties is to become infected with what for many people has been a mild disease, in the hope of having natural immunity to the novel H1N1 flu virus that might circulate later and cause more severe disease.
CDC does not recommend "swine flu parties" as a way to protect against novel H1N1 flu in the future. While the disease seen in the current novel H1N1 flu outbreak has been mild for many people, it has been severe and even fatal for others. There is no way to predict with certainty what the outcome will be for an individual or, equally important, for others to whom the intentionally infected person may spread the virus.
CDC recommends that people with novel H1N1 flu avoid contact with others as much as possible. They should stay home from work or school for 7 days after the onset of illness or until at least 24 hours after symptoms have resolved, whichever is longer.
Contamination & Cleaning
How long can influenza virus remain viable on objects (such as books and doorknobs)? Studies have shown that influenza virus can survive on environmental surfaces and can infect a person for up to 2-8 hours after being deposited on the surface.
What kills influenza virus? Influenza virus is destroyed by heat (167-212°F [75-100°C]). In addition, several chemical germicides, including chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, detergents (soap), iodophors (iodine-based antiseptics), and alcohols are effective against human influenza viruses if used in proper concentration for a sufficient length of time. For example, wipes or gels with alcohol in them can be used to clean hands. The gels should be rubbed into hands until they are dry.
What surfaces are most likely to be sources of contamination? Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk, for example, and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.
How should waste disposal be handled to prevent the spread of influenza virus? To prevent the spread of influenza virus, it is recommended that tissues and other disposable items used by an infected person be thrown in the trash. Additionally, persons should wash their hands with soap and water after touching used tissues and similar waste.
What household cleaning should be done to prevent the spread of influenza virus? To prevent the spread of influenza virus it is important to keep surfaces (especially bedside tables, surfaces in the bathroom, kitchen counters and toys for children) clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.
How should linens, eating utensils and dishes of persons infected with influenza virus be handled? Linens, eating utensils, and dishes belonging to those who are sick do not need to be cleaned separately, but importantly these items should not be shared without washing thoroughly first. Linens (such as bed sheets and towels) should be washed by using household laundry soap and tumbled dry on a hot setting. Individuals should avoid “hugging” laundry prior to washing it to prevent contaminating themselves. Individuals should wash their hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub immediately after handling dirty laundry.
Eating utensils should be washed either in a dishwasher or by hand with water and soap.
Response & Investigation
What is CDC doing in response to the outbreak? CDC has implemented its emergency response. The agency’s goals are to reduce transmission and illness severity, and provide information to help health care providers, public health officials and the public address the challenges posed by the new virus. CDC continues to issue new interim guidance for clinicians and public health professionals. In addition, CDC’s Division of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) continues to send antiviral drugs, personal protective equipment, and respiratory protection devices to all 50 states and U.S. territories to help them respond to the outbreak.
What epidemiological investigations are taking place in response to the recent outbreak? CDC works very closely with state and local officials in areas where human cases of new H1N1 flu infections have been identified. In California and Texas, where EpiAid teams have been deployed, many epidemiological activities are taking place or planned including:
- Active surveillance in the counties where infections in humans have been identified;
- Studies of health care workers who were exposed to patients infected with the virus to see if they became infected;
- Studies of households and other contacts of people who were confirmed to have been infected to see if they became infected;
- Study of a public high school where three confirmed human cases of H1N1 flu occurred to see if anyone became infected and how much contact they had with a confirmed case; and
- Study to see how long a person with the virus infection sheds the virus.
Who is in charge of medicine in the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) once it is deployed? Local health officials have full control of SNS medicine once supplies are deployed to a city, state, or territory. Federal, state, and local community planners are working together to ensure that SNS medicines will be delivered to the affected area as soon as possible. Many cities, states, and territories have already received SNS supplies. After CDC sends medicine to a state or city, control and distribution of the supply is at the discretion of that state or local health department. Most states and cities also have their own medicines that they can access to treat infected persons.
*Note: Much of the information in this document is based on studies and past experience with seasonal (human) influenza. CDC believes the information applies to the new H1N1 (swine) viruses as well, but studies on this virus are ongoing to learn more about its characteristics. This document will be updated as new information becomes available.

Controversies over anorexia notwithstanding, runways and the pages of fashion model magazines still belong to waifs and waiflike actresses who wear size 0’s and 2’s. A real girl like Julie Henderson doesn’t have a lot of options.
So thank god for Sports Illustrated, Henderson said recently.
“They embrace every aspect of you, so
you never have issues of feeling insecure with your body. They actually like it when you gain weight. They’ll say, ‘Oh, your boobs are bigger.’?”
Henderson, a Katy native who’s appeared the past three years in SI’s annual Swimsuit Issue, is enjoying the glow of being mildly famous — not a paparazzi magnet, exactly, but the kind of famous that allows her to wade ankle-deep in the Great American Celebrity Pool.
Home in Houston for a few days before the Austin wedding of fellow SI hottie Brooklyn Decker to tennis star Andy Roddick, Henderson talked candidly about what life as an SI model brings — and doesn’t.
“You have a totally different status in the industry,” she said. “You’re not just a mannequin in a magazine anymore, but a name and a face. Doors open to do commercials, TV, movies, whatever you want.”
Later this month, she’ll film a segment as a guest judge on America’s Next Top Model, and she said she’s discussing an endorsement with an Australian swimwear line.
She earns as much as $7,000 a day now. But she’s not booked every day. It’s more like every few weeks, and she spends a lot of time at casting calls for everything from print ad campaigns to TV pilots.
Waifs and actresses aren’t the only competition: the SI pinup sorority this year included 19 swimsuit models, three tennis players, race car driver Danica Patrick and 10 NBA dancers. (Their channel at www.si.com, full of videos and photos, has generated more than 22 million views since it debuted in February.)
SI swimsuit editor Diane Smith says she looks for girls who aren’t too thin, with good smiles and a nice, sexy shape — “natural beauties with a good, healthy glow.” Henderson, she adds, has exactly the right look — “such a sporty, sexy beauty, with those freckles.”
Henderson describes herself as a “more clothes the better” kind of girl With a quick smile, she looks so wholesome it’s hard to believe she’s the same girl who entices viewers into a video with the announcement, “Guess what? I’m naked right now.”
She took her first modeling classes when she was 8 at Houston’s Barbizon School, not aiming to be a professional, she said. “It was like etiquette school, how to sit properly and all that.”
By the time she was 16 she was working in New York and Europe. In 2002, models with figures could still find plentiful work for magazines like Harper’s Bazaar, Elle Girl and Teen Vogue. Henderson has also done print ads for companies such as Benetton and Pantene.
But by the time she was 19, modeling for SI became her best route to big-time success.
“I’m a big girl,” she said, looking at her least favorite body part — her thighs. “I built up these muscles playing sports as a kid, and they aren’t going away.” Keeping it fresh
Henderson didn’t find her way into SI overnight. Rejected the first year she auditioned, she also had to pass several rounds of interviews.
That’s not uncommon, said Smith. She works with all the major New York modeling agencies to discover new models.
Smith typically chooses 18 for each issue, including five or six rookies “to keep it fresh.” But with limited space, she also has to drop five or six from the stable each year.
Henderson said the SI team eased her into her first appearance, in 2007, with a shoot on a University of Southern California campus that had a cheerleading theme.
“They never ask you to take your top off,” she said.
They do, however, pair rookies with more experienced models who’ve shed their inhibitions. So in 2008, when Henderson posed for SI in Israel, the top came off.
And this year, she volunteered to do a body painting session — wearing a “swimsuit” that’s all concept, no fabric. Body painting, she said, “is the most exclusive party you can get into besides the cover.”
Henderson chuckled, recalling the awkwardness of requesting a total body wax job. She marveled that the painting, done by artist Joanne Gair in several sessions, took 16 hours. (Her “bikini” was inspired by Mayan tile work.)
But slithering naked in the surf — on a public beach in Grenada — didn’t come naturally, even with a margarita to sip.
“They always say you feel like you have a swimsuit on. That’s a load of B.S.,” Henderson said, smiling. “I could feel the wind going in places I’m not comfortable with.”
SI pays its models an editorial rate that doesn’t make them rich, Smith said, explaining that “it’s a vehicle for them to become higher profile.”
To make it to the next level — one where she might really earn big dollars — Henderson admitted, “You have to build celebrity status.” Which, she has discovered, also means developing a tolerance for the rumor mill.
Henderson has appeared often since February with hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons, who is old enough to be her father.
“We’ve been friends for years now,” she said. “But the first time someone wrote that we were feeding each other, canoodling and making out, I was like, ‘Really?’?”
Then she got invited to Vanity Fair’s Oscar night party — one of the biggest celeb-fests of the year — and it occurred to her that maybe, as they say, all publicity is good. So she called Simmons and suggested, with mischief in mind, that they attend together. He’s been a willing publicity partner ever since.
“He’s such a great businessman — one of the best people to have in your life. He’s always wanting to do projects together. He likes to brand people and will go over and above to try to make that happen,” she said.
She said she’s also “casually dating and looking for Mr. Right.”
And in some ways, she’s still a kid at heart. When she’s home in the summer, she likes to hit the Master Blaster at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels with her dad, Katy real estate agent Rick Henderson — a tradition they’ve had since she was little. (He’s been divorced from Julie’s mother, Zoe Truhe, since the mid-1990s.)
For his part, good ol’ dad is mostly proud.
“The SI people are phenomenal,” he said. “They take their girls under their wings, and it’s like a family situation. Seeing that has eased it for me, knowing people are looking out for her besides me.”
And as for the body painting for body part modeling?
“It’s not like she’s in Playboy or Penthouse,” he said.
“If that was the case, me and her would be having to talk.”

Oral contraceptives are medicines taken by mouth to help prevent pregnancy. They are also known as the pill, OCs, or birth control pills.
Description
Oral contraceptives, or birth control pills, contain synthetic forms of two hormones produced naturally in the body. These hormones, estrogen and progestin, regulate the female menstrual cycle. Some types of oral contraceptives use only progestational hormones, but most use a combination of estrogen and progestin. As of 2004, there were three types of oral contraceptives marketed:
- Monophasic use a fixed dose of both estrogen and progestin during the entire cycle.
- Biphasic oral contraceptives use a constant amount of estrogen during the full cycle, but the amount of progestin is lower during the first half of the cycle and increases in the second half. This shift in dosage is intended to mimic the natural ovarian cycle.
- Triphasic oral contraceptives may vary both the estrogen and progestin levels at different times during the cycle.
The goal of the biphasic and triphasic formulations is to achieve adequate control of the menstrual cycle while using lower doses of both estrogens and progestins, thereby reducing the risk of adverse effects. Reviews of controlled studies have not demonstrated a clear advantage of the newer formulations over the older monophasic drugs.
General use
When taken in the proper amounts, following a specific schedule, oral contraceptives are very effective in preventing pregnancy. Studies show that fewer than one of every 100 females who use oral contraceptives correctly becomes pregnant during the first year of use.
These pills have several effects that help prevent pregnancy. For pregnancy to occur, an egg must become mature inside a woman's ovary, be released, and travel to the fallopian tube. Sperm must travel through the reproductive track to fertilize the egg in the fallopian tube. Then the fertilized egg must travel to the woman's uterus (womb), where it lodges in the uterus lining and develops into a fetus.
The main way that oral contraceptives prevent pregnancy is by keeping an egg from ripening fully. Eggs that do not ripen fully cannot be fertilized. In addition, birth control pills thicken mucus in the woman's body through which the sperm has to swim. Thus it is more difficult for the sperm to reach the egg. Oral contraceptives also change the uterine lining so that a fertilized egg cannot lodge there to develop.
Although contraception is the primary use of these medications, they may also be used to treat adolescent and post-adolescent acne in girls. Some products have this as part of their official indications, but others may be used as well. (taken from:http://www.healthline.com)
Good news for safer sex appeared last week - the FDA approved a new version of the female condom. Most people have a negative view of female condoms - they look more complicated, are much less wide-spread than male condoms, are more expensive, and the older versions could be noisy and require a lot of lubricant.
The FDA just announced its approval of FC2, which is made of of the thinner and lighter material nitrile (which can be used by people latex sensitivities) and will be up to 30% cheaper than the original female condom. The female-initiated barrier method is made by the Female Health Company and is designed to fix a lot of the problems associated with the earlier female condom which has been on the market since 1993.
Akimbo, the blog from the International Women's Health Coalition, has a new video featuring two IWHC staff members talking about the new female condom and why it is an integral part of international women's health and contraception effprts.
Have your 30s and 40s flown by and you don't feel different-you just look different? If so, then it's time to revitalize the first thing people notice: your hair color. Whether you're a blonde, brunette or redhead, your hair color sets the tone for your entire look. It can make you look 10 years older or 10 years younger. Family Circle's beauty director, Linda Moran Evans, says, "Women should use hair color as a tool to brighten up their entire face-if your hair color doesn't match your skin tone, you may look drab or washed out." Evans shares her expert tips for vital hair color and a vital you.
Hair Color Confidence Revitalize your hair color by using a product that provides natural-looking, illuminating color. For your grays, Evans recommends keeping hair color looking natural by using a product that subtly blends away gray for that natural, classic look. Natural Instincts Loving Care has a gentle formula with no peroxide and no ammonia that leaves hair shinier and healthier looking than before you colored it. Added benefit-its volumizing formula will leave even fine or thinning hair looking fuller.
Moisturize! To complement your revitalized hair color and brighten up your look, Evans recommends using products that help even out your skin tone and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, like those from Olay Definity. Since skin loses moisture and elasticity, use a lightweight foundation that is moisturizing and contains at least SPF 15. Evans says, "Give your skin at least a full minute to absorb liquid formulas, so powder won't cling to slick spots."
Brighten Up Reconsider your hair color and makeup color choices to complement your changing skin tone. Try going a little lighter with your hair color shade to enhance your complexion. Evans recommends adding a bright, rosy lip color to soften your overall look. One option is CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor, which lasts 16 hours and has a beautiful shade range.
Stay Smooth And Silky Nothing finishes off your look like shiny, healthy hair. Keep hair smooth and silky with a weekly deep-conditioning treatment. "Slather on the treatment and cover hair with a plastic shower cap to help it penetrate the hair to help maintain that just-colored look and feel," Evans suggests. Great-looking hair sets the stage for looking as good as you feel-regardless of your age. You look like yourself-only better.
Viagra is well established for treating male impotence. A new study slated to appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests the drug can also relieve some sexual difficulties in women caused by antidepressant use.
Here 7 steps to make beauty:
1) Gently pinch your eyebrows between your thumb and your index fingers. Pinch your eyebrows along from the beginning of your brow till the end. Do it for about 30 times or more if you like. This helps to elevate stress at your eye areas.
2) Apply some pressure by pressing along the entire eyebrow with your index fingers. Repeat this for about 30 times. Steps 1 and 2 helps to reduce dark eye circles too.
4) Make little circular motions on your temples lightly. Let the circular motions be directed outwards, moving from the insides of your temples which are nearest to the eyes towards your hairline each time. Repeat the circular motions for about 30 times to relief stress, the blues and headaches.
5) Slightly part your mouth like you're saying 'O' then press lightly on the cheeks. Repeat this for 30 times and this helps to stimulate collagen production to keep cheeks uplifted and firm.
6) From the sides of the nose, sweep the face in outward strokes with your fingers. Repeat this for about 30 times too. Make the strokes upwards from the sides of your nose towards the cheekbones gently and dont overpull the skin. This helps to drain toxins and water retention. Also, it helps to elevate sinus blockage. For further sinus relief, lightly rub the areas at the sides of the nose.
7) Run your fingers by applying slight pressure along your entire jawline, starting from your chin till your ears. Repeat for about 30 times. This helps to release stress along the jawline. We are usually unaware of how much tension we apply to the jawline as sometimes we tend to clench our teeth unknowingly.

That's the beauty of the ancient Chinese martial art of tai chi. Based on a series of sets of gentle exercises with names like 'grasp the sparrows tail' and 'part the wild horse's mane', tai chi may benefit people with type 2 diabetes, say Australian researchers.
They compared blood sugar levels, blood pressure and other health measures for 25 patients who attended formal tai chi classes over a six-month period to those of a control group who did no formal exercise.
The study, published this month in Australian Family Physician, used standardised quality of life tests and reported that the group attending tai chi classes scored a significant improvement in both their social and their physical functioning. They also had lowered cholesterol levels compared to the control group.
However, the researchers from the University of New South Wales, admit the intensity and duration of the gentle tai chi exercise program wasn't sufficient to make a big difference to blood sugar levels and blood pressure.
But they argue that tai chi has higher levels of adherence than many other types of exercise. As it is non-competitive and levels are increased slowly, it is suitable for sedentary, overweight or disabled people, making it a good choice for those daunted by more strenuous programs.
A good first step
It has long been recognised that regular exercise has a positive impact on diabetes.
"Apart from genetic influences, physical inactivity and poor diet are the biggest causes of type 2 diabetes," says Bronwyn Penny, who is an accredited exercise physiologist at Diabetes Australia NSW.
"From a diabetes management point of view, exercise should form a major cornerstone in controlling the condition."
But a large proportion of adults with type 2 diabetes don't follow activity guidelines, which recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week.
Penny says many diabetics are overweight or obese and associated arthritis and other conditions may make it difficult for people with these conditions to exercise.
"Tai chi and other forms of gentle exercise can be a great stepping stone to getting people more active," Penny says.
In the long-term, however, she believes people with diabetes need more intense exercise than tai chi to sustain good blood glucose control.
"We know that moderate to vigorous exercise will have a better impact on managing and controlling diabetes, however for a lot of people, tai chi can be an effective start."
Body and mind
Study co-author Dr Paul Lam is a Sydney-based GP, lecturer in community medicine at the University of New South Wales and a tai chi master.
Lam has seen a rapid increase in diabetes patients in his own practice, and says that despite most doctors recommending exercise to manage type 2 diabetes, many people with diabetes lead a sedentary lifestyle and are less likely to adhere to regular exercise.
"It's a vicious circle, many diabetics don't enjoy exercise because they're not very good at sports or they're not very co-ordinated, so they don't do it and then end up being even less co-ordinated."
Tai chi can help people with diabetes many ways, says Lam.
"It's not just the exercise, people are also learning to relax and improve their ability to handle stress, they get social reinforcement from sharing an enjoyable experience with others and it also nurtures community spirit."
Tai chi can help improve flexibility as well as have other mental health benefits, says Dr Pat Phillips, senior director of endocrinology at Adelaide's Queen Elizabeth Hospital and co-author of a book on the subject with Dr Lam.
"Flexibility can be a real challenge for people with Type 2 diabetes," Phillips says explaining that one common complication of diabetes is stiffness in joints and muscles that can result when the body's protein cells become bathed in glucose.
He's also a fan of the social benefits of tai chi for people with diabetes.
"We tend to underestimate the value of social interaction and the good feeling that you can get from exercising in a group."
Phillips adds that while medical management of diabetes often focuses on tablets, insulin treatments, blood tests and diet, there's increasing realisation that physical fitness and good mental health are important components in controlling the condition.
The joy of exercise
Joy Ford was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in her early thirties, over a decade ago, and also has sciatica.
She took up tai chi nearly two years ago and also walks for an hour or so five days a week.
"I can really feel the benefit from tai chi in my joints and I haven't had sciatica for more than twelve months now," she says.
"There's no way I would go to the gym with all those people in size ten leotards. The tai chi classes have a really big range of ages and sizes and people are very nice," she says, confessing that in the past, she's struggled to stay with any exercise programs for long.
Establishing an exercise routine that encourages long-term adherence is becoming more important for staying healthy as our sedentary Western lifestyle settles in for the long haul.
