One can't help but heed the wonders of Botox. Joan Rivers swears by it! While Cher, Kylie Minogue and Madonna are rumored to have Botox-ed. Thanks to the celebrity hype cosmetic surgeons have been cashing into the Botox craze since 2002, using this youthful serum to banish facial wrinkles and crow's feet. Botox is basically a toxin that causes botulism (which causes muscle weakness, or in extreme cases paralysis) in concentrated form. However despite its toxic rap, when injected in small, thinned portions into muscles, Botox causes them to weaken. Basically, Botox works by terminating muscle contractions, which in turn causes wrinkles in the area to relax and soften. Botox most effectively exiles forehead lines, crow's feet around the eyes and frown lines. Wrinkles caused purely by gravity won't respond to Botox treatments. Botox is performed when serum is injected with a tiny needle into the facial muscles of aged areas. The procedure takes mere minutes to perform and no anesthesia is required as there's hardly any discomfort. It will take approximately a week to see the full effects of Botox, and wrinkles remain smooth for approximately 4 to 6 months. After this time muscle contractions will gradually return and lines and wrinkles will re-appear. On average Botox typically costs between $350 and $500 per session. Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of Botox, so patients are asked to avoid alcohol, Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications at least one week prior to Botox treatment. A small percentage of patients have reported eyelid drooping, but this is avoided by abstaining from rubbing or laying on injected areas for up to 4 hours. Botox should also be avoided at all costs by individuals with any type of neurological disorder, along with pregnant or breastfeeding women.
